Islam teaches that every human being is no more nor less than a creation of Allah, and all are born equal. Sadly, the worth of individuals as they grow into adults becomes spoiled for humanity by the Creator. Natural reasons enables any person whose mind is not damaged to ‘see’ the evidence for the existence of Allah, but no person is forced to accept it or act upon it. It is purely a matter of choice.
This does not mean that Allah parents know only too well just how much one can love a child that is making terrible mistakes in life; they never cease to love them, but they can see that they are building up for themselves a pattern of inevitable consequences. However, Muslims believe that the universe is based on justice, and the hope that God’s justice is always tempered with mercy.
‘A’ ishah recorded: ‘when a person acknowledges sin and repents, Allah forgives him.’(Bukhari; Muslims)
Ibn Abbas recorded: ‘If anyone continually asks pardon, Allah will appoint a way out of every distress and relief from every anxiety, and will provide for him a way he did not expect. (Ahmed, Abu Dawod and Ibn Majah)
Allah’s mercy is far beyond what any human have the right to expect, or indeed, what they would show to each other!
‘O My servants, who have transgressed against their souls!
Do not despair of the mercy of God; for Allah forgives all sins; He is of Oft – Forgiving, Most Merciful. ‘ (39:53)
‘It is part of the mercy of Allah that you should deal gently with those (who have offended you, or who have sinned).
If you were serve with them, or harsh – hearted, they would have broken away from about you. So pass over (their faults), and ask for forgiveness for them.’ (3:159)
‘Not for you (but for God) is the decision whether He turn in mercy to them or punish them, for they are indeed wrongdoers. To God belongs everything that is in the heavens and on earth, and He forgives whom He pleases and punishes whom He pleases; but god is Oft – Forgiving and Most Merciful. ‘ (3:128 – 129)
There are many, many passages that show Allah’s kindness and mercy. The same teaching is clearly represented in the hadith.
Abu Sa’id reported that: ‘Truly, the devil said: By my honor, O Lord, I shall never stop misguiding your servants so long as life remains in their bodies. The almighty, Glorious Lord said: By My honor, I shall never cease forgiving them so long they ask forgiveness of Me.’ (Ahmed)
Abu Dharr recorded: He who does a good deed will receive ten times that amount of blessing… but he who does an evil deed will receive just the equivalent amount of evil. Or, ‘I shall grant him forgiveness. If anyone draws the length of a hand’s span near to Me, I shall draw the length of a cubit near to him… If anyone comes to Me walking, I shall come to him at the run; and if anyone meets Me with sins the size of earth, but has not associated anything with Me, Is shall forgive him.’ (Muslim)
What wonderful mercy of God! How gracious, and how undeserved.
Anas Ibn Malik recorded: ‘O son of Adam – so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach and could of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth itself, and were you then to face Me ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness in equal measures.’ (Tirmidhi, Ahmed)
However, it has to be said that just as some humans refuse to stop their crazy path to their own doom despite the desperate love of those who love them – in the same way the future state of existence for some people will be extinction, because of their absolute refusal to accept the love and mercy of God, or to live in a way acceptable to Him.
